Carbon Credit Project Readiness, MRV and Verification Training

A one-day programme for organisations considering whether an activity they are already planning could generate carbon credits, and for the teams who would have to make that happen. Reducing emissions and generating a saleable credit are different projects with different evidence requirements, and the gap between them is where most first attempts fail.

The programme follows a project from idea to issuance: choosing a standard and a methodology, proving additionality, setting a baseline that will survive challenge, writing the project design document, building a monitoring plan that the operations team can actually run, and going through validation and verification. It is equally useful as a buyer's course, since the same knowledge is what lets an organisation assess the quality of credits it is being offered.

Programme Agenda

01

9:00 AM - 9:15 AM

Welcome and Programme Overview

Introduction to the session, objectives, and housekeeping.

02

9:15 AM - 10:15 AM

The Market and the Malaysian Context

Compliance and voluntary carbon markets and how they differ. The role of crediting standards such as the Verified Carbon Standard and the Gold Standard, cooperative approaches under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and corresponding adjustments, and the domestic picture including the Bursa Carbon Exchange and Malaysia's evolving policy on carbon pricing. Who buys credits and why, and what a buyer's due diligence now looks like.

04

10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Project Types and Choosing a Methodology

Avoidance and removal projects, and the main categories: renewable energy, energy efficiency, methane capture and avoidance, waste, cookstoves, and nature-based projects including forestry and blue carbon. How to find the approved methodology that fits your activity, read its applicability conditions honestly, and recognise early that no methodology fits.

05

11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Additionality and Baselines

The two tests that decide whether a project has a credit to sell. Regulatory surplus, the investment test, the barriers analysis and common practice analysis, and how to assemble evidence for each before the decision has been taken rather than after. Baseline scenario selection, baseline emissions calculation, and conservativeness. Why a project that was going to happen anyway is not creditable, and what that means for the sequencing of your own board approval.

07

1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Designing the MRV System

Monitoring, reporting and verification as an operational discipline. Writing a monitoring plan that specifies each parameter, its measurement method, frequency, instrument, calibration regime, responsible role and record. Data gaps and how the methodology requires them to be treated. Leakage and permanence, and reversal risk buffers for nature-based projects. The realistic operational burden, and designing for the staff who will run it on a wet Tuesday.

08

2:30 PM - 3:15 PM

The Project Design Document and Stakeholder Requirements

What goes into a PDD and the sections that reviewers reject most often. Stakeholder consultation requirements, free prior and informed consent where communities and indigenous land rights are involved, safeguards, and co-benefit claims aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals. Land tenure and rights to the credits, which is the issue that most often stops a Malaysian nature-based project.

10

3:30 PM - 4:15 PM

Validation, Verification and Issuance

The role of the validation and verification body, accreditation, and the difference between validating a design and verifying a performance period. The audit process, site visits, corrective action requests, and typical timelines and costs. Registry listing, issuance, serialisation and retirement, and where double counting risk arises. Reading the integrity signals a buyer applies, including the Core Carbon Principles.

11

4:15 PM - 4:45 PM

Project Screening Exercise

Participants screen a candidate activity from their own organisation against additionality, methodology fit, data availability and rights, and reach a go, no-go or investigate-further decision.

4:45 PM - 5:00 PM

Wrap-Up and Q&A

Key takeaways, next steps, and close.

Key Outcomes

  • Describe how voluntary and compliance carbon markets operate and where Malaysian projects fit
  • Select an appropriate crediting standard and methodology and test the applicability conditions
  • Assemble an additionality argument and set a conservative, defensible baseline
  • Design a monitoring plan that operations staff can run and that will survive verification
  • Anticipate the validation and verification process, its timeline, cost and common corrective actions
  • Assess the quality and integrity of carbon credits offered by a third party
