Industrial IoT (IIoT) & Sensor Data Basics
This is the foundational smart-factory skill every digital-manufacturing roadmap depends on. Participants learn how industrial IoT is architected, where data is processed (edge vs cloud), how sensor data is collected and transported, and build a simple live dashboard with real readings during the hands-on session.
Aimed at plant engineers, maintenance staff and operations managers who need to make sense of industrial sensor data rather than build the systems that collect it. The course covers sensor types and what each can and cannot tell you, sampling rates, connectivity options and industrial protocols, edge versus cloud processing, and the data quality problems that make downstream analysis unreliable. Security is covered as an integral topic rather than an appendix, since connecting operational technology to a network changes its risk profile substantially. Participants finish able to specify what an IIoT deployment on their own line would need.

Programme Modules
IIoT Architecture
Sensors, gateways, networks, platforms and applications. How a smart-factory data flow is structured from the machine to the dashboard.
Edge vs Cloud Data
What to process at the edge and what to send to the cloud. Bandwidth, latency and cost trade-offs, and where inference should happen.
Sensor Data Collection
Protocols (MQTT, OPC-UA, Modbus), data formats and sampling. Practical collection from a demo sensor set without writing firmware.
Hands-on Dashboard
Participants connect a live data feed to a dashboard, visualise trends and set simple thresholds, the same pattern used on a real factory floor.
Key Outcomes
- Describe a complete IIoT data architecture
- Decide what belongs at the edge vs the cloud
- Collect sensor data over common industrial protocols
- Build a working live dashboard
- Spot data-quality issues before they reach reports
